Week 1; Boomers and Busters

Who to Start & Who to Avoid in Week 1

It’s time to dust off the fantasy cobwebs as the long wait is finally over!! By now we should all be recovered from our draft day festivities and post day hangovers. A day of gluttony, fliers and sleepers, not to mention all the banter associated with fellow league owners. Don’t you just love this time of year?

Are you ready to begin the long hard slog through another fabulous season of fantasy football?

Don’t worry, it’s people like me, with over 25 years of fantasy football expertise, that can save your fantasy season from the toilet. I’ll be providing weekly insight into the fantasy world with my bold predictions, outlooks and news around the NFL. Don’t settle for second best again, it’s time to dominate your league and stand tall atop the proverbial ‘mountain of glory’ in 2017.

Finally all the preseason games, player battles and team hype is behind as the final 53-man rosters are set. It’s finally time to set our Week 1 lineups and get out of the gates in rigorous fashion. Not always so easy, even in Week1 as strange things happen early in the NFL season. I understand the hours of research and dedication to victory. But if you’re like many who still need assurance your making the right move than my Week 1 Boomers & Busters may help you make that final game-time decision. Selecting the correct boom or bust player each week is difference maker between fantasy champions and fantasy goats. Don’t be a goat!

With that said, let’s begin with my Week 1 Boomer & Buster picks, it’s time to go to work my friends.

QUARTERBACKS

Boomer Pick; James Winston

This is Jameis Winston’s first meeting in Miami in his young career. In 2016 Winston started the season on the road at Atlanta with 4 TDs and over 270 passing yards and I expect him to continue that trend in 2017. Winston is a September baller posting his best season stats during this span making him a hot starter to the NFL season. Winston is poised to elevate his status to the next level amongst the elite fantasy QBs in 2017 and it starts in Miami. OUTLOOK: Versus a porous Dolphins defense, a healthy supporting core, Winston should be a top 5 QB this week on the road in Miami. Get him in your lineup.

Buster Pick; Russel Wilson

Russel Wilson last two meetings in GB resulted in two road losses including 5 total INTs. His questionable o-line and a crowded backfield only lead to a offensive hodgepodge that will give the Packers the edge over Seattle and Russell Wilson. OUTLOOK: I’m seeing a slow start to the 2017 season for Wilson. If Green Bay keeps Russel’s rushing yards to a minimum, than expect nothing more then a top 12 QB performance in Week 1. Even though other experts have him as a top 5 pick stay clear if possible.

RUNNING BACKS

Boomer Pick; Lamar Miller

Lamar Miller that’s right I said it! Lamar Miller is a boom! Yeah yeah while everyone is down on Miller this preseason…too many carries last season….not enough production….blah blah blah. The fact remains that the Texans are committed to Miller and now have a better understanding on how to utilize his talents in 2017. With the Texans average passing attack, and the dinged up reserves at the position. Lamar stands to be the complete workhorse in Week 1 against an improved, yet feeble, Jaguars defense that has yet to be proven. BOLD PREDICTION: Lock in Lamar as a top 5 running back in Week 1 in PPR leagues.

Buster Pick; Marshawn Lynch

Many experts are predicting Lynch as a top 15 running back in week 1. Well I don’t buy it! In an interview by Jon Wertheim regarding Lynch’s passion for football, he replied with a hasty “I’m done. I’m not playing football anymore,” This tells me enough that his return to football isn’t for the love of the game. His passion is gone, the tank is empty and the wheels will fall off at some point in the 2017 season. Like the legendary Pat Tillman once said, “Passion is kind of an important word for me, whether it’s playing sports or whether it’s just living or whatever you’re going to do. In my opinion you should be passionate about it or else, why do it?”  Kudos to that Mr Tillman! OUTLOOK: Coming out of retirement for his first NFL action in nearly two season. I’m predicting a sluggish, non-motivated, over hyped Lynch to deliver a dud this week for his fantasy owners. Avoid if possible.

WIDE RECEIVERS

Boomer Pick; Sammy Watkins

Sammy Watkins is my junk point boomer pick for Week 1 as the Rams lock horns at home versus a subpar Colts defense. A game flow that favors Watkins collecting a plethora of targets as the Rams showcase their new toy and vastly improved offense. OUTLOOK: With Jared Goff moving into his second season at the helm, and finally showing some signs of life as an actual NFL QB, there’s reason for optimism with the Rams new look offense with Watkins leading the way in his contract season.

Buster Pick; Terrelle Pryor

The converted wideout is entering his second season at his new found position. Pryor is built to be a wide receiver with his perfect size and speed. However, he’s still developing as a wideout, as inconsistent play makes him a true boom or bust player week in week out. Historically speaking, second year wide outs tend to struggle as defenses develop schemes to shut them down, it’s how Pryor adjusts his game and route running that will determine his success or failure in 2017. I’m see a slow start to the season making Pryor a week 1 bust!  OUTLOOK: While rapport with rookie QB DeShone Kiser may take time It appears the rookie QB has found his stride early on in preseason with second year wideout Corey Coleman. If this continues into the regular season (as I predict it will) than expect Pryor to take a back seat as the young duo of Kiser/Coleman create something special for Cleveland in 2017.
